Ein Schwerpunkt meiner wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit war über viele Jahre die Optimierung der Beatmungstherapie bei respiratorischer Insuffizienz Früh- und Neugeborener. Mit dem Ziel das Beatmungstrauma bei Früh- und Negeborenen zu minimieren haben wir an der Univ.-Klinik Göttingen hierzu die elektrische Impedanztomographie, ein neues Verfahren zur Darstellung der regionalen Lungenventilation erstmals bei Früh- und Neugeborenen klinisch eingesetzt und optimiert. Desweiteren habe ich mich über viele Jahre in experimentellen und klinischen Studien mit der Atemgasklimatisierung beschäftigt. Beratend war ich an der Entwicklung von Beatmungsgeräten  und einem Applikationsgerät für Stickoxid-Behandlung Früh- und Neugeborener beteiligt. Im Klinikum Nürnberg war die Arbeit im Deutschen Frühgeborenen-Netzwerk (German Neonatal Network GNN) ein Schwerpunkt meiner klinisch-wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit. Hieraus sind mehrere Publikationen entstanden. Als Neonatologie waren wir an mehreren Multizentrischen Studien beteiligt. Im Rahmen meiner Habilitation habe ich experimentelle Untersuchungen am isolierten Herzmuskel zu Fragen der Ontogenese des neonatalen Myokards durchgeführt.

·      Prospektive Studie zu radiologischen Veränderungen nach Surfactant-Substitution im Rahmen einer randomisierten europäischen Multicenter-Studie mit porcinem Surfactant.

·   Prospektive, randomisierte Multicenterstudie zur Surfactanttherapie bei Neugeborenen mit Atemnotsyndrom und Streptokokken-Infektion (Studienleitung: Prof. Herting, Lübeck, DFG  He 2072/2-1, Swedish Research Concil Project Nr. 3351).

·    Untersuchungen zur "Transpulmonalen-Indikator-Dilution" als hämodynamisches Monitoring bei kritisch kranken Neugeborenen und Säuglingen (Industriekooperation Pulsion, München).

·      Untersuchungen zur Surfactant-Applikation bei Kindern mit Pneumonie und ARDS (Förderung DFG He 2072/2-2, Swedish Research Concil Project Nr. 3351).

· Prospektive randomisierte Multicenterstudie zum Einsatz von bovinem Surfactant bei pädiatrischem ARDS (Studienleitung Prof. Möller, Saarbrücken, Förderung durch Boehringer IngelheimPharma KG, Ingelheim).

· Klinische Prüfung zur Wirksamkeit und Sicherheit von Clonidin zur Analgosedierung langzeitbeatmeter neonatologisch-pädiatrischer Patienten (Studienleitung Prof. Roth Köln, Förderung BMBF, Demonstrationsstudie PAED-Net).
